The Bangladesh Army has said the renewed turmoil in Khagrachhari over the past 10 days is part of a larger “conspiracy” aimed at destabilising the Chittagong Hill Tracts and triggering communal clashes between hill people and Bengalis. In a statement, the Inter-Services Public Relations Directorate (ISPR) held the United People’s Democratic Front (UPDF) responsible for the unrest. “From September 19 to 28, the series of incidents makes it clear that there is a larger conspiracy to destabilise the hill region and trigger communal clashes without resorting to lawful means,” the statement declared.
