Despite the high cost of importing sugar, Carew & Co, Bangladesh’s only licenced alcohol distillery, has posted its highest profits in the 88 years since it started operations. Sugar Mill Managing Director Md Rabbik Hasan said that Carew posted record profits in the 2024-25 fiscal year. Despite paying Tk 1.4 billion in taxes to state coffers and nearly Tk 625 million in sugar imports, the profits amounted to over Tk 1.29 billion.
