The Indian government has made it mandatory for non-basmati rice exports to be registered with the Agriculture and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry. The Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) under the commerce ministry said in a notification on Monday: “Export policy of Non-Basmati Rice has been amended by incorporating an additional policy condition to the extent that export of Non-Basmati Rice shall be permitted only upon registration of contracts with the APEDA.” India is one of the world’s top rice exporters.
